The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has clarified his earlier comments regarding the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
Speaking in response to growing public debate over the legislation, Mr. Bagbin stated that his role as Speaker does not amount to instructing Parliament to pass any bill, stressing that parliamentary decisions are made collectively by Members of Parliament through debate and voting procedures.
His clarification comes amid renewed national and international attention on the bill, which has already been passed by Parliament but is awaiting the next stages of assent and legal processes.
The Speaker’s comments seek to address interpretations that he had directed or influenced the passage of the bill, insisting instead that Parliament operates independently and follows constitutional procedures in law-making.
The anti-LGBTQ+ legislation has generated widespread debate across Ghana, with supporters arguing it reflects cultural and family values, while critics warn of human rights and economic implications.
