Speaking on the recurring floods in Accra, John Dramani Mahama stressed that both human actions and institutional failures are major causes of the problem.
According to the President, some individuals have been illegally selling protected lands that are not meant for development. He also criticized municipal assemblies and building officers for granting permits that allow construction in sensitive ecological and waterway areas.
Mahama emphasized that these practices contribute significantly to the persistent flooding experienced in the capital and called for greater accountability and stricter enforcement of planning and environmental regulations.
He indicated that addressing the flooding challenge requires not only improved drainage infrastructure but also responsible land use and adherence to building regulations to prevent developments in flood-prone and protected zones.
