Ghana is set to deploy approximately 400 nurses to Jamaica under a renewed bilateral agreement aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery in the Caribbean nation. The deal was reached during the revival of the Ghana–Jamaica Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), marking the first major engagement between the two countries in over two decades.
According to Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the agreement will provide employment and international exposure for Ghanaian healthcare professionals while helping Jamaica address shortages in its health sector. Jamaica’s Health Minister, Christopher Tufton, described the partnership as a significant step toward improving healthcare services and workforce stability.
The first batch of health workers is expected to begin deployment in June 2026, with both countries working on credential verification, licensing, orientation, and welfare arrangements for the nurses. The partnership also includes plans for broader cooperation in health, education, tourism, and defence.
Officials say the agreement reflects growing South-South cooperation and is expected to deepen the longstanding historical and cultural ties between Ghana and Jamaica.
