Healthcare services at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi are facing further disruption after nurses and midwives joined the ongoing industrial action protesting the suspension of the hospital's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo.
The strike took effect at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, following a directive from the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) at KATH, which is demanding the immediate withdrawal of the suspension imposed by the Minister for Health.
In a statement, the association described the Minister's decision as unnecessary and ineffective in addressing the hospital's longstanding challenges.
According to the nurses and midwives, the two-week suspension of Dr. Baidoo does not address the enormous pressures facing the facility, including infrastructural deficits, congestion, inadequate logistics, and resource constraints.
The industrial action is expected to further affect healthcare delivery at one of Ghana's largest referral hospitals as stakeholders await a resolution to the impasse.
