Private legal practitioner and spokesperson for the Movement for Change, Andrew Appiah-Danquah, has taken a swipe at the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) over its recent call for President John Dramani Mahama to reverse the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 3, Appiah-Danquah described the GBA’s statement as “preposterous” and lacking broad support from within the legal fraternity.

“It’s preposterous and very dangerous for 0.1% of a group to go and take a decision and claim it represents all of us. I am not part of that decision,” he said.

While acknowledging a prior GBA statement that emphasized respect for the rule of law and transparency, which he deemed balanced and appropriate, Appiah-Danquah criticized the newer position as misrepresenting the collective voice of Ghana’s legal professionals.

“They came out with an earlier decision which I felt was perfect—a call to abide by the rule of law and promote transparency. That’s what we all hope for in building a political culture based on legal principles,” he stated.

He concluded by cautioning against a small group within the GBA speaking unilaterally for the entire association without adequate consultation or consensus.
