‘Vampire: The Masquerade’ 6th Edition in the Works; World of Darkness Boss Unveils Franchise’s Transmedia Plans

The long-awaited 6th edition of “Vampire: The Masquerade” is in active development at publisher White Wolf amid a flurry of transmedia development for the entire World of Darkness franchise.

“Vampire: The Masquerade 6th Edition” was announced Thursday at Gen Con 2026 by World of Darkness creative director Jess Lanzillo as the first project to be developed and published in-house since the tabletop role-playing game maker’s relaunch in 2025.

The new version of “Vampire” aims to retain the identity of the original game will modernizing its dice mechanics, character creation, and “Storyteller” tools.

With the 5th edition released in 2018, Lanzillo (a former exec at Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons maker Wizards of the Coast) says now was the time for a new version — both from a business standpoint, and a cultural one.

“Usually, you’ll see an edition begin to cycle at around year 10,” Lanzillo says of the average life of a tabletop role-playing game. “That’s usually when you’ve produce most of the things in line that would be of interest to the players, and you’re starting to get some diminishing returns. So, from a business and product perspective, that’s kind of how it works. But really, from an IP perspective — which is what I’m really interested in here, is building out the World of Darkness and ‘Vampire’ as a full franchise — it’s to make sure that we’re up to date with the current moment. And one of the things that we have with the World of Darkness is a transliteracy with the current era and the challenges that happen today.”

Among those pressing themes the White Wolf team is focusing on for the modern area are the evolving role of technology and the pursuit of “perpetual longevity.”

“One of the things that you look at with the resurgence of ‘Vampire’ in modern media is that vampires come back whenever the culture is really anxious about things like power and appetite and what we’re willing to do to survive,” Lanzillo says. “Every generation will reinvent them around what’s going on and their own fears. So you see something like ‘Twilight,’ and that’s about desire and restraint and repression. And what you see now is different. So look at the last two years, for instance: You’ve got ‘Nosferatu,’ which is a very auteur kind of horror event, and then you got ‘Sinners,’ which is one of the biggest movies of 2025, and it used vampirism as an analog to talk about exploitation and community and who gets to own culture.”

Then there’s AMC’s Anne Rice universe, including “Interview With a Vampire” and “The Vampire Lestat,” which Lanzillo says are about “memory and complicity.”

“So the vampire right now is a vehicle for that morally complex moment,” the White Wolf creative director says. “So it’s not a coincidence that everyone’s like, ah, vampires are really cool looking at it. People are living through eras of institutions that they don’t trust and systems that feed on them. So the monster that is all charming and hungry and has all this power and it’s in a nice suit is the monster of the moment. And ‘Vampire’ has always been that, since 1991. It’s just evolving for the current moment.”

White Wolf is opening a free alpha playtest for “Vampire: The Masquerade 6th Edition” on Demiplane to allow World of Darkness fans early access and a chance to “shape V6’s development” before its release.

Per the official description, the current features of the new version include:

  • Core System Changes: Vitae and Willpower/Health merge into a single resource, Difficulty subtracts dice from a pool rather than raising a target number, and players roll nearly all of the dice at the table.
  • Reimagined Tension: An added Beast/Nature Tracker and revamped Humanity Scale turn the struggle between Beast and Humanity into an active, personalized system rather than a static number.
  • Player and Storyteller Resources: Players earn Quickening on strong rolls, while Drama lets Storytellers complicate scenes, threaten The Masquerade, or empower NPCs.
  • Ideation and Creation: Play is further streamlined with a unified procedure for physical and social conflict. Create characters built around lifepaths, natures, clan traits, and merits. Discipline powers also scale with dots and favor active rather than passive use.
  • Mechanics: “Devil’s Bargains” and “Choose Your Pain” mechanics are added to support player-driven failure states, while Storytellers can enjoy a smoother, level-based building system for NPCs. Players and Storytellers can also easily find safety tools through explicit TTRPG Safety Toolkit callouts.

“Vampire: The Masquerade 6th Edition” is just the start of Lanzillo’s long-term plans for the World of Darkness franchise, with “a lot of things in the works and on the horizon,” including multiple video games.

“We have ‘Eternal Whispers.’ We have ‘Deathwish,’ which is a ‘Hunter: The Reckoning’ game that looks outstanding,” Lanzillo says. “You’re a hunter hunting the various supernatural creatures in New York City and it’s very story driven. So we have a bunch of stuff going on. There are more cooking, and more that are going to be coming up that we’re going to be tying in in a more purposeful way with the themes that are coming out with the new edition.”

World of Darkness is exploring other project ideas across gaming, film and TV, but Lanzillo wants to prioritize a clear release strategy before solidifying any further plans.

“I think sometimes when you are doing transmedia franchises, you can get ahead of yourself and you can build on things a little bit too much and it becomes a house of cards that collapses because people are required to have seen everything else and know everything else about it,” Lanzillo says. “And I think that’s a lot of what we’re thinking about with the world building for this edition of ‘Vampire’ is, how do we reward behavior rather than punish a lack of knowledge?”
