“Don’t Panic, President Won’t Sign This Foolish Bill” – Ghanaian Trans Musician Angel Maxine Urges Calm

In the wake of Ghana’s parliament passing a sweeping anti-LGBTQ+ bill on May 29, 2026, outspoken transgender musician and activist Angel Maxine is calling for calm within the community.
In a video shared on social media, Angel Maxine reassured LGBTQ+ Ghanaians that they are safe, dismissing the parliamentary approval as little more than political grandstanding.
“As we continue to fight it, please do not panic. Do not be afraid. Nobody can do anything to you,” Maxine said. “It’s the politicians sitting in Parliament who are fooling themselves. They’re challenging themselves. That is why they have passed that bill.”
The new bill criminalizes same-sex relationships and the promotion of LGBTQ+ activities. If signed into law, identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer could lead to up to three years in prison. It also introduces a controversial “duty to report” clause, requiring citizens to report prohibited acts to police.
But Angel Maxine remains confident that the bill will not receive presidential assent.
“The President has not signed it, and the President will not sign it,” Maxine said, referring to President John Dramani Mahama. “The President is not foolish. He will not sign this foolish bill. So don’t be afraid.”
The musician also offered a theory on why the bill passed now, claiming that Ghana is preparing to host a Continental Anti-Right Conference. According to Maxine, delegates from Uganda and other African countries with similar laws would gather in Ghana, and passing the bill creates the impression that authorities are taking action.
“This is just the bill that they have passed,” Maxine added. “Nobody can harm you.”
The bill now heads to the president’s office for assent. For now, Angel Maxine’s message to the LGBTQ+ community is clear: stay calm, stay visible, and don’t let fear win.
