POLICE RECOVER GH¢140,000 AND AK-47 RIFLE FOLLOWING ROBBERY ATTACK AT LASHIBI

The Sakumono District Police Command has successfully recovered GH¢140,000.00 and an AK-47 assault rifle following a violent robbery targeted at a mobile money vendor in Lashibi. The incident, which took place on Friday, 3rd July 2026, left one of the suspected robbers dead while the victim escaped unharmed.

The Ambush and Retaliation
According to preliminary police investigations, the mobile money vendor was driving home after work with a bag containing GH¢140,000.00 when the vehicle was ambushed by two armed men riding a motorbike. The attackers opened fire on the vehicle, shattering the front windscreen and damaging the right rear tyre, before successfully seizing the bag of cash.

However, the escape attempt quickly took a dramatic turn. As the suspects tried to flee on their motorbike, the complainant fired back at them. One of the suspects was shot and died at the scene. Witnessing his partner fall, the second suspect fled the area on foot, abandoning the stolen bag of money, which was subsequently recovered intact by authorities. The victim did not sustain any injuries during the exchange.

Recovered Evidence and Identification
A subsequent search conducted on the deceased suspect led to the retrieval of:

An AK-47 assault rifle

Two magazines loaded with a total of 55 rounds of live ammunition

An additional 11 rounds of live ammunition

GH¢3,000.00 in separate cash

A Samsung mobile phone

An identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46

At the crime scene, police investigators also recovered five AK-47 spent shells and two pistol spent shells.

Ongoing Investigation and Police Assurance
The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary in Accra for preservation, autopsy, and formal identification. The Accra Regional Police Command has since taken over the case and launched a manhunt to track down and arrest the fleeing accomplice.

In a statement signed by Chief Superintendent Ms. Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the Police Service reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to combating violent crime. Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information that could lead to the arrest of the fugitive suspect to report to the nearest police station or call the emergency hotlines at 18555 or 191.
