The Nkawie Divisional Police Command has arrested six individuals for allegedly posing as military personnel and engaging in illegal activities at an active mining site near Kotokoum in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region. The operation, conducted by the Nkawie Divisional Operation Command, was led by ASP Noah Yakpah together with Chief Inspector Fosu and his team.

According to police reports, the suspects stormed the mining site dressed in military uniforms and claimed to be personnel from the 4 Battalion (4BN) in Kumasi. They are alleged to have caused extensive damage to equipment and property at the site before police intercepted them following a swift response

Suspects Identified

The six suspects have been identified as Abubakar Sadik, Alasfat Fuseini, Abdul Basit, Zukalanine, Seidu Sumaila, and Sharif Musah. Police have indicated that the alleged ringleader, identified as Zulkalanine Seidu, is believed to have coordinated the operation and supplied the military uniforms used. He is said to be a local miner residing in the Kotokoum area.

Items Seized During Operation

During a search operation, police retrieved a cache of items believed to have been used in the operation. These included:

One firearm and a pistol
Seven rounds of live ammunition
Pepper spray
Handcuffs
Bayonets and a jackknife
Tasers

Claim of Muslim Community Taskforce

During preliminary interrogation following their arrest, the suspects reportedly claimed they were members of a Muslim Community Taskforce working on behalf of Ghana Muslims. However, police have stated that they are investigating the authenticity of this claim as part of ongoing inquiries.

Concerns Over Security Impersonation

The incident has raised concerns among residents and miners in the area over the growing trend of criminal elements impersonating security personnel to carry out unlawful activities. This development comes amid broader efforts by authorities to combat illegal mining operations in the region.

Police have assured the public that investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case, including the source of the military-style uniforms and weapons allegedly found in the suspects' possession. Investigators are also working to determine whether the suspects are linked to similar robbery incidents in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects are currently being held in police custody at Toase and are expected to appear before the Nkawie Circuit Court sitting at Toase for prosecution.

Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or groups claiming to be security operatives without proper identification
