The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced plans by the government to review the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) timetable to provide candidates with more time between examination papers and reduce the stress associated with the current schedule.
Speaking at Aburi Girlsβ Senior High School on Wednesday, June 10, the Minister acknowledged concerns raised by students and stakeholders about the existing examination structure, which is conducted within a single week from Monday to Friday.
According to him, the compressed nature of the timetable places considerable pressure on candidates, limiting the time available for preparation between papers.
βI understand that our schedule of the exams for BECE was just Monday to Friday, and that put many of you under some stress,β he stated.
Mr. Iddrisu explained that under the proposed arrangement, the examination period would be extended to allow candidates more preparation time between subjects.
He indicated that the revised timetable would see the BECE begin on a Wednesday and conclude the following Wednesday, creating longer intervals between papers and incorporating a weekend break within the examination period.
βThe government is reviewing the BECE exams calendar. So now the BECE will begin on a Wednesday and end the following Wednesday, so that adequate time is given to our learners to prepare for BECE across the country,β he said.
The Minister noted that the move forms part of efforts to improve the examination experience for candidates and enhance their performance by reducing undue pressure.
He further disclosed that the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) would oversee the implementation of the revised timetable once the review process is completed and approved.
The proposed changes are expected to benefit thousands of BECE candidates nationwide by giving them more time to prepare for papers and easing the intensity of the examination schedule.
