Heavy Rains Cause Bridge Collapse: Ashaiman Municipal Assembly Closes Major Roads
📍 Ghana • by Znews • Jun 07, 2026
The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly has announced the temporary closure of two key road sections following the collapse of two bridges triggered by heavy rainfall in the area.
The affected routes include the road from Borla Junction to Community 22 Washing Bay, as well as the stretch between Community 22 and Community 22 Annex—both leading to the collapsed bridges.
According to the Assembly, the closures are a necessary safety measure to prevent potential loss of life and to protect motorists and pedestrians from using compromised infrastructure weakened by severe erosion from the downpour.
Authorities report that the heavy rains destabilized the bridges, causing them to give way and leaving both sections completely impassable for vehicles, motorcycles, and foot traffic.
The Assembly’s Works Department is now collaborating with the Department of Urban Roads and Municipal Disaster Prevention teams to assess the extent of the damage and kick off emergency interventions.
On-site crews are currently installing barricades and warning signs to block access to the danger zones, while diversion routes are being mapped out to help commuters navigate safely.
Residents and motorists are strongly advised to avoid the closed roads and follow all diversion instructions, as repair work is expected to begin as soon as possible.
The Assembly has also appealed to the public to stop dumping waste into drains, warning that blocked drainage systems worsen flooding and contribute to infrastructure collapse during heavy rains.
With more rainfall forecast by meteorological authorities, the Assembly cautions that continued disregard for proper waste disposal could increase the risk of further flooding and damage to roads and bridges.
In the meantime, the Municipal Assembly assures residents that urgent steps are being taken to restore safe access and strengthen affected infrastructure to prevent future incidents.
