Hiplife veteran Mzbel is speaking out—and she’s not holding back.

In a candid interview with Zionfelix on June 4, 2026, the “16 Years” hitmaker addressed her rocky history with Afro-dancehall star Stonebwoy. According to Mzbel, what once started as a genuine friendship eventually turned sour as Stonebwoy’s career began to take off.

“Stonebwoy used to be my friend, but as his brand started growing, he cut me off and unfollowed me on all social media platforms,” she revealed.

While she admitted feeling hurt at first, Mzbel said she eventually made peace with the personal distance between them. But one incident—tied to a 2024 Grammys article—left a deeper wound.

The article in question, written by Nana Kojo Mula, was titled “10 Artists Essential to Ghanaian Hiplife: Reggie Rockstone, Sarkodie, Mzbel & More.” Mzbel explains that instead of letting the featured artists enjoy their moment, Stonebwoy publicly pointed out that his name was missing from the list. He urged the Recording Academy to “do due diligence” before publishing pieces aimed at capturing the essence of Ghanaian sound.

“That was painful,” Mzbel said. “Instead of allowing the artists featured in the article, including myself, to enjoy and celebrate the recognition, he made tweets and comments that shifted the attention away from us.”

She noted that the piece was specifically focused on Hiplife—a genre Stonebwoy isn’t primarily known for. “What made it even more surprising was that the article was specifically about Hiplife, and Stonebwoy is not generally known as a Hiplife artiste,” she added.

Mzbel acknowledged that Stonebwoy has many accomplishments to his name, but she was taken aback by what she called an “unnecessary reaction” to a list he wasn’t even part of. For her, it reinforced a growing perception: that Stonebwoy comes across as bitter.

“This hurt more especially because I was just beginning to regain recognition after years away from the spotlight,” she shared.

As of now, Stonebwoy has not publicly responded to Mzbel’s claims. But one thing’s for sure—this conversation has reignited debates about respect, genre boundaries, and ego in Ghana’s music industry.
