Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has publicly criticised Parliament's approval of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, arguing that no Parliament should criminalise people because of who they love. In comments made after the bill's passage, he described provisions that criminalise individuals based on their sexual orientation as a dangerous precedent that is inconsistent with democratic principles.
Afenyo-Markin also raised concerns about changes made to the bill before its approval, questioning why the legislation returned to Parliament with numerous amendments rather than being presented in its earlier form. According to the Minority Caucus, some of the amendments may have altered the strength and legal character of the original proposal.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill was passed by Parliament on May 29 and now awaits the decision of President John Dramani Mahama on whether to sign it into law. The legislation has generated intense debate both within Ghana and internationally.
