The Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) has closed down five medical laboratories and arrested two individuals during a regulatory inspection exercise in the Tamale Metropolis aimed at enforcing professional standards and protecting public health. The operation, conducted under the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013 (Act 857), forms part of the Council’s ongoing efforts to ensure that allied health facilities comply with established standards and operate legally.

During inspections carried out across the metropolis, the Council discovered several violations, including the operation of facilities without valid licences, inadequate infrastructure, and the absence of qualified personnel. One of the arrests was made at New Life Medical Laboratory, where an individual was allegedly operating the facility without the required authorization.
Of the eight laboratories inspected on the first day, five were ordered to cease operations immediately. The affected facilities include Sochibga Medical Laboratory, Kairos Medical Services, Standard Medical Laboratory, New Life Medical Laboratory and Scanning Unit, and Royal K4 Consult.

Addressing journalists after the exercise, the Registrar of the AHPC, Dr. Issahaku Shirazu, said the inspections revealed serious breaches of professional and operational standards required for laboratory practice.

According to him, some facilities lacked qualified personnel, failed to document quality control procedures, and did not have standard operating protocols needed to guarantee accurate and reliable laboratory results.

He warned that such deficiencies could compromise diagnoses and treatment decisions, posing a significant risk to patient safety.

“Until we see evidence that the procedures they run are well-established procedures, we cannot open these laboratories for them to operate. We cannot trust what the outcome will be,” Dr. Shirazu stated.
