The Government of Ghana has temporarily suspended new registrations for the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals from South Africa as authorities work to process the overwhelming number of requests already received.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, more than 800 Ghanaians have registered with Ghanaโs High Commission in Pretoria seeking evacuation following renewed anti-immigrant protests and xenophobic attacks in parts of South Africa.
Officials say the evacuation process has been delayed due to mandatory passenger screening, flight permit approvals, and extensive coordination between Ghanaian and South African authorities. The government noted that legal and logistical requirements must be completed before additional evacuation flights can proceed.
The first batch of nearly 300 Ghanaians has already been repatriated to Accra, where they were received by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Government officials have assured returnees of support measures, including reintegration assistance and psychosocial services.
Authorities have urged Ghanaians still in South Africa to remain in contact with the High Commission and follow official updates as arrangements continue for subsequent evacuation flights.
