The Government of Ghana has announced plans to purchase match tickets for Ghanaians living abroad to enable them to support the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
President John Dramani Mahama revealed the initiative during a diaspora town hall meeting, explaining that the government will not be able to fund full travel packages for fans due to the extremely high cost of transporting supporters to the tournament, which is estimated at about $11,000 per person.
Instead, the state will focus on buying tickets and distributing them through organised Ghanaian communities in host cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This approach, according to the government, is a more realistic way to ensure strong support for the national team without putting excessive pressure on public finances.
Officials say the plan is aimed at strengthening diaspora engagement while still ensuring that Ghana has visible fan support during the tournament.
