Accra, Ghana โ€” June 1, 2026

The Government of Ghana has intensified efforts to evacuate its citizens from South Africa following growing anti-immigrant protests and fears of xenophobic attacks in several parts of the country.

Nearly 300 Ghanaians arrived safely in Accra this week as part of a voluntary repatriation programme coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria. Authorities say more evacuation flights are expected, with over 800 Ghanaians reportedly registering to return home amid concerns for their safety.

The repatriation follows weeks of demonstrations in South Africa, where some groups have blamed undocumented migrants for rising unemployment, crime and pressure on public services. Reports of harassment, threats and attacks against foreign nationals have raised alarm across the continent.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, assured returning citizens that government remains committed to protecting Ghanaians abroad and providing support for reintegration. Officials have also been engaging South African authorities through diplomatic channels over the safety of Ghanaian nationals.

The situation has sparked wider discussions on migration, African unity and the treatment of foreign workers across the continent. Several African countries are reportedly monitoring developments closely, with some considering similar evacuation measures for their citizens.
