Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed a new bilateral agreement between Ghana and Jamaica, announcing that the two countries have agreed to deploy about 400 Ghanaian nurses to Jamaica to support healthcare delivery in the Caribbean nation. The agreement was one of several outcomes of the recently revived Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), which resumed after a 21-year break.

The Minister disclosed this in a Facebook post on Sunday, May 31, 2026.
Mr. Ablakwa commended Jamaica's Foreign Minister, Kamina Johnson Smith, for leading a high-level delegation to Ghana and helping strengthen ties between the two countries.

He also congratulated Johnson Smith on her decade-long service as Jamaica's Foreign Minister, describing her as an accomplished diplomat and the world's longest-serving female foreign minister.

According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, Ghana and Jamaica also signed agreements on defence cooperation and tourism as part of efforts to deepen collaboration across multiple sectors.

In addition, both countries have agreed to conclude ongoing negotiations to facilitate the deployment of Ghanaian teachers to Jamaica by August this year. “We must all be proud to see how Ghanaian professionals are in high demand all over the world,” Ablakwa stated.

The Minister noted that discussions also highlighted the strong historical and cultural bonds between the two countries, including Jamaica's support for Ghana's successful campaign at the United Nations to have the transatlantic enslavement of Africans recognised as the gravest crime against humanity.

He further acknowledged Jamaica's appreciation for Ghana's humanitarian assistance following Hurricane Melisa, when Ghana deployed soldiers and donated relief supplies to support recovery efforts.

Mr. Ablakwa also disclosed that Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has extended a special invitation to President John Dramani Mahama to serve as guest of honour at this year's Jamaican National Day celebrations.

The Foreign Affairs Minister described the renewed momentum in Ghana-Jamaica relations as encouraging and expressed optimism about future cooperation between the two nations.
