Police Shoot Armed Traditional Leader During Palace Standoff At Agona Amenfi

A community celebration turned chaotic on Friday after police officers reportedly sh.0t and disarmed an armed traditional leader during a tense standoff at the Agona Amenfi Chiefโ€™s Palace in the Amenfi Central District of the Western Region.

The suspect, said to be a local royal, was reportedly dressed in traditional attire adorned with charms and armed with a cutlass when he allegedly attacked a palace messenger who had been sent to retrieve a ceremonial hoe for a sod-cutting ceremony.

According to eyewitnesses, traditional authorities, community leaders and residents had gathered for the launch of a new maternity ward project when the incident occurred.

Reports indicate that the suspect prevented the messenger from entering the palace and allegedly inflicted multiple cutlass wounds on him during a confrontation.

Police officers who responded to the scene reportedly attempted to persuade the armed man to surrender peacefully, but he allegedly refused, resulting in a prolonged standoff.

After several unsuccessful attempts to disarm him, police reportedly shot the suspect in the hand, enabling officers to overpower and arrest him.

The injured messenger and suspect were subsequently taken for medical treatment, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
