Naomi Watts’ Secret ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Role Reunited Her With Tom Holland, 12 Years After ‘The Impossible’: ‘From Playing Your Mom to Your AI’

Naomi Watts has taken to Instagram to celebrate her secret role in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” Sony and Marvel Studios’ record-breaking superhero movie. The Oscar nominee voices Peter Parker’s artificial intelligence assistant E.V. in the movie. Watts celebrated the film’s success on social media while sharing a photo of herself recording her lines virtually with “Brand New Day” director Destin Daniel Cretton.

“From playing your mom to playing your AI (100% human made),” Watts wrote in the caption. “Congrats Tom [Holland], Destin, and the whole ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ team on the historic opening weekend!! Immensely proud to even just a tiny part of this incredible film!”

Watts’ voice role in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” reunited her with Cretton, Holland and Sadie Sink. Not only did she star in Cretton’s 2017 drama “The Glass Castle” alongside sink and fellow MCU alum Brie Larson, but Watts and Holland graced the screen in 2012’s “The Impossible.” The movie, a harrowing account of one family’s separation during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, earned Watts an Oscar nomination for best actress and marked Holland’s acting debut in a live-action feature film.

During Holland’s press tour for “The Odyssey” and “Brand New Day,” he stopped by Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast and praised Watts for being the first person to teach him how to conduct himself on a film set when they made “The Impossible” together. Holland said that through Watts he was able to “watch a professional at the top of her game deliver, you know, a sort of masterful performance while also taking me under her wing and teaching me everything I know about cinema.”

Holland landed the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man three years after “The Impossible.” Now him and Watts are back on screen interacting together in “Brand New Day,” which set the domestic box office opening weekend record with a $360 million debut. The movie has grossed $1 billion globally in six days, becoming the second fastest film in history to hit the milestone.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is now playing in theaters nationwide.
