The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has once again urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to expedite investigations into the 2019 murder of journalist Ahmed Suale, stressing the continued threats to press freedom in the country.
During the 2025 World Press Freedom Day and Honours Night, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour disclosed that 11 journalists had been assaulted in February alone. He underscored the critical need for justice and accountability in cases involving violence against media professionals.
“Our records, especially regarding economic, security, and legislative factors, are worrying. That’s why we are calling on the police to take attacks on journalists seriously,” Dwumfour stated. “Justice for Ahmed Suale remains a key demand. We urge the IGP to act now.”
Meanwhile, Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin addressed the event’s theme by highlighting the implications of artificial intelligence in journalism. He cautioned against its unchecked use, warning of the potential spread of disinformation.
“To safeguard press freedom in the age of AI, we must pursue a balanced approach that promotes innovation while ensuring transparency and accountability,” Afenyo-Markin said. He called for the development of national and regional AI policies that reinforce ethical journalism.
