Lydia Mugambe, a former High Court judge in Uganda and United Nations tribunal judge, was sentenced to six years and four months in prison by Oxford Crown Court for enslaving a young Ugandan lady in the UK. The 50-year-old offender was convicted on several counts, including forced labor, conspiracy to violate UK immigration rules, and witness intimidation.

The court heard that Mugambe used her position of authority to lure the victim to the UK under false pretenses, where she was compelled to work unpaid and exposed to different sorts of abuse. The victim, known only as "Rona," was recruited from Uganda with promises of employment but was forced into domestic servitude. Mugambe took Rona's passport and bank card, restricted her movements, and abused her emotionally. The victim eventually sought assistance, prompting an investigation by Thames Valley Police.

Mugambe, who was pursuing a PhD in law at the University of Oxford at the time of the crimes, first contested the claims but was found guilty after a trial. The court underlined her lack of remorse and exploitation of her judicial position to exploit the victim.

In addition to her prison sentence, Mugambe has been suspended from her academic job at Oxford University and resigned from her position at the United Nations. A restraining order was also issued, banning her from contacting the victim.
