A U.S. Army helicopter went down near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, though President Donald Trump confirmed that both crew members walked away without injury. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Speaking to reporters at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York β€” where he had just watched the NBA Finals β€” Trump kept it brief: "The pilots are fine. Nobody injured. We are going to issue a report tomorrow."
The New York Times identified the aircraft as an Apache attack helicopter. The U.S. military's Central Command had not issued an official statement as of Tuesday morning.
Apache helicopters have played a central role in American operations in the region, supporting a blockade on Iranian crude oil shipments and assisting UAE forces in intercepting Iranian drones throughout the ongoing conflict.
A Region Still on Edge
The crash comes at a volatile moment. Iran and Israel exchanged fire the day before in what observers described as the most serious breach yet of the fragile ceasefire that has been holding β€” or barely holding β€” since April. Iranian state television reported at least two members of its air defense units were killed in the Israeli strikes.
The war, which escalated sharply after the U.S. and Israel began striking Iran on February 28, has sent shockwaves through the global economy β€” pushing energy prices higher and driving up the cost of everyday goods including food.
Meanwhile, Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical oil transit routes, adding further pressure to an already strained international market.
